Getting Started on Your “Lean” Journey
Tuesday, May 6, 2008 • 8:30 am – 10:30 am

Jeffrey Moore
WMEP
the Results People
Starting your Lean Journey without a Value Stream Map (VSM) is like starting your vacation trip with out a map. A VSM will help you to find process improvements that your customers will see.
A VSM allows you to identify process improvements that will take the greatest waste out of a process. A VSM can be developed for an office or manufacturing process. In fact, the greatest elimination of waste can take place in the office processes of a manufacturing company. The objective is to process customer orders in the shortest time possible.
A VSM will document the flow of the process steps, locations of inventory, bottlenecks, and general process waste. This is accomplished by separating out Value Added Process from Non-Value added process steps. The objective is to eliminate or minimize the Non-Value added activities.
With a current state VSM completed you have the opportunity to design the future state VSM of the process. You can then determine what improvements can be made and establish an action plan to implement the improvements.
At the PMA Conference this year you will have the opportunity to learn how to draw a VSM so you can eliminate process waste at your company.
Key Learnings will include:
• Avoiding ”Drive By Kaizen’s”
• How a VSM is different from a Process Map
• How to focus on improvement activities that your
• customer will see
• How to draw a Value Stream Map
This is the final session of a series of three Lean
Manufacturing topics presented by Jeffrey Moore.

Urethane Acrylate Oligomers and UV/EB Curing:
A Disruptive Technology for Traditional Urethane Prepolymers
Igor V. Khudyakov & Joseph A. Leon
Bomar Specialties
UV/EB Technology, in particular the use of UV light curing technology, used in conjunction with urethane acrylate oligomers is replacing the thermal cure of urethane prepolymers in several markets. Current advances in the curatives for urethane acrylate oligomers are allowing for the thick section cure of these materials. With the advances, UV technology is entering the cast urethane market. Urethane acrylate oligomers are based on the same polyols and isocyanates used for isocyanate terminated urethane prepolymers. The fundamentals of urethane acrylate oligomers and UV light curing are outlined in this paper. Properties of urethane acrylate oligomers range from hard abrasion-resistant coatings to soft elastomers with ten times elongation-to-break. Several chemical and physical properties of commercial Bomar urethane acrylate oligomers are described in more detail.
Premium Blocked PU System for Pouring Very Large Parts
George Nybakken, Richard Palinkas, Ian Laskowitz
Chemtura
A paper given at 2007 PMA described a blocked PU system that uses hot mix, hot inserts and hot molds to give a very quick cure and de-mold of 10 minutes or less. This paper describes and documents this same system giving a very long pot life to pour very large parts. The cool mix is pour into a cool mold, giving multi-hours pot life. The cool mold is then heated to de-block temperatures for curing. While very large parts over 2000 lbs can take up to 12 hours to reach de-block temperature and cure, the system does cure completely with premium properties. Sensitive physical properties were measure through the thickness. Thermocouples recorded the temperature rise, the de-block and the resulting exotherm through the thickness. A video of the pouring of a 4 drum part is shown.
Polyurethane Elastomers Based on 1,3 and 1,4-bis(isocyanatomethyl)cyclohexane
Rui Xie &
Deb Bhattacharjee
The Dow Chemical Company
Performance deficiency of polyurethane elastomers based on commercial aliphatic isocyanates has significantly limited their use in the market place. Though aliphatic based polyurethane elastomers possess increased resistance to hydrolysis and thermal degradation in addition to greater light stability, these elastomers often experience a decrease in physico-mechanical properties when compared to aromatic isocyanate based materials. In this study, we investigated elastomers based on 1,3 and 1,4-bis(isocyanatomethyl)cyclohexane, an experimental diisocyanate recently developed by The Dow Chemical Company. The physical properties of the elastomers are reported and discussed in comparison to similar elastomers prepared from commercially available aliphatic and aromatic isocyanate.
